If the plates that you sell cost me more money than the ones that I can buy at the supermarket, what’s in it for me?
Yes, the tableware that we stock does cost a bit more than the plates and cups that you can buy at the supermarket, but, it is the real cost of the product. As an independent, small business we do not have the buying power of big supermarket chains and the ability to push prices down (nor do we wish to do so). Materials have a cost, as does the labour involved in manufacture of the product and transportation of the goods. It is essential that the people involved in the process of these goods earn a fair wage.
So, the benefit of buying these products is a clear conscience! Workers earn a living wage, products are made from sustainable materials, and the end result is biodegradable and compostable. Our eco-circle is complete.
Can I re-use the cups and plates that you sell?
The compostable and biodegradable cups and plates that we sell are environmentally friendly alternatives to the usual disposable cups and plates that are on the market. As such they are not intended for re-use, but are an eco-disposable solution. Our belief is that if you have crockery that can be washed and re-used then great, use that. But if you’re holding an event where you need disposable cups and plates, be eco-conscious and buy the biodegradable and compostable alternatives that do the job just as well (if not better) and do not involve the production of landfill waste.
However, some of our range, primarily the whole leaf plates that we stock, can be carefully handwashed (not dishwashed!) and re-used, or be given alternative uses around the home. Our children enjoy using them for digging in the sand, having ‘make believe’ picnics and they’re good for Frisbees too! We’ve put our used cassava hot cup to good use too as a toothbrush holder.
I haven’t got a garden or a home composter, is there any point me buying these alternatives?
An emphatic YES, most local councils now provide a collection for compostable waste, so it’s not necessary to have your own home composting facilities.
However, these cups and plates do need to be disposed of correctly as they need the correct conditions to be able to biodegrade and decompose, they will not do this if they are sent to the landfill with the rest of your household rubbish. Please separate them from the rest of your non-recyclable rubbish and either put them in your home composter or the compostable waste to be collected by your local council.
I like the look of the plates but don’t want to commit to buying a lot of them without having seen them first. Can I see a sample?
If you are interested in the products that we stock but are not sure about committing, then please get in touch with us and we can arrange for you to have a sample. We charge a nominal fee for this to cover our costs, but will reimburse you fully when you place an order. If this sounds like it might be for you, please email or ring us and tell us which range you’re interested in and we’ll oblige.
